David Lean Directs...Sir David Lean, CBE (25 March 1908–16 April 1991) The son of strict Quaker parents, he did not see his first film until aged 17. He began his career in 1928 as a tea-boy for Gaumont-British studios. He soon was promoted to clap-board boy & finally to editor - a position at which he excelled. By the end of the 1930s Lean was the most highly-paid editor working in British cinema & widely regarded as the best. |
